Results are online for Saturday’s inaugural Alderman James Cappleman’s 46th Ward Lincoln Park Criterium. We also congratulate Adam Herndon, Kristin Meshberg, Dustin Morici, Robert Ruggles, Todd Simeone and Sue Wellinghoff for earning our $50 Leland Kermesse bonus. Big thanks to everyone who came out, including our great USAC officials and our race director William Pankonin and volunteer coordinator Rick LaCour, as well as all our generous supporters, including Alderman Cappleman, I-GO Car Sharing, AthletiCo, Get a Grip Cycles and The Chicago Bicycle Advocate. Three bricks for the team at Hillsboro-Roubaix

Hillsboro-Rouabix has long been a target of XXX Racing-AthletiCo and the 2012 edition proved to be our most successful outing yet. Battling through epic rain and win, the women’s 4’s squad worked to help Ellen Ryan earn her second wind of the season. In the 3’s, teamwork led to getting Jake Buescher and Adam Herndon on the podium, while in a very competitive P/1/2 race, Dave Moyer placed 7th, our best finish ever in that field. All this of course is prologue to next weekend’s grueling Leland Kermesse and our own Lincoln Park Criterium. Will you do the double?

A special bonus for the Leland-Lincoln Park double

The only thing we love more than a great bike race is a weekend of two great bike races. That’s why we’re thrilled that our Lincoln Park Criterium is sharing the April 21-22 weekend with the Leland Kermesse.

It will take true panache and grit to take part in the Kermesse and then do well the next day, so for six of our fields on Sunday we are offering a special $50 bonus to the top-placed rider who also raced on Saturday.

The bonus will be awarded to the top-placed Leland Kermesse participant in the following Lincoln Park Criterium fields:

Cat P/1/2/3
Women Cat P/1/2/3/4
Cat 3
Cat 4
Women Cat 4
Masters 40+

A few requirements and clarifications:

Riders must pre-register for both races.
This is not an omnium (although it’s excellent training for June’s Tour of Galena). Results in the Kermesse do not count toward this bonus, but riders must finish.
It is each rider’s responsibility to ensure they are officially placed in the Leland Kermesse and not listed as DNF.
If official results of the Leland Kermesse are not available by Sunday, prizes will be mailed to winners as soon as possible.
Riders do not need to race the same category to be eligible for the prize. In other words, a junior who races the juniors race on Saturday could earn the prize for the Cat 4 race on Sunday.
Riders may win the bonus only once. Should a rider be eligible for the prize in two categories, the bonus will be applied to toward a rider’s first result.

XXX Racing-AthletiCo announces 2012 elite and elite development squads

XXX Racing-AthletiCo continues its tradition of developing and supporting the leading racers in the Midwest and is proud to announce its 2012 Elite and Elite Development rosters and their race schedules.

The eight-member elite team will contest both regional- and national-level races on the road, on the track and in cyclocross. The team includes two-time state criterium and state points race champion Dave Moyer as well as reigning state pursuit champion Liam Donoghue, who holds the individual pursuit track record at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome in Northbrook, IL. The team will target the Joe Martin Stage Race, the Tour of Galena and the Tour of America’s Dairyland, as well as national-level track events.

The Elite Development Program represents XXX Racing-AthletiCo’s commitment to developing Midwestern riders from their first race to entry into the elite and professional ranks. The eight member elite development squad is composed of Category 3 men and women and for the first time includes juniors, who represent some of the most promising amateur cyclists in the region. The team boasts a number of state champions, including Category 3 state criterium and time trial champion Ryan Fay, Category 3 cyclocross champion William Pankonin and Chicago Cyclocross Cup overall winner Sandra Samman, as well as junior state criterium champion Nikos Hessert. The team is poised to continue its success and deliver new athletes to the elite level of the sport.

Getting a SLO start to the season

Saturday wrapped up another successful spring training camp in San Luis Obispo, Calif., where hundreds of miles of riding and tens of thousands of feet of climbing will surely prime us for the slight elevation of the Lincoln Park Criterium. This year was made special by the presence of two juniors, Kyle Mindick and Ben O’Malley, who rode like kings, and we also enjoyed the company and help of Get a Grip Cycles mechanics Michael Berman and Geoff Scott, who provided support and kept us rolling smoothly all week. And speaking of rolling smoothly, many of us carved the descents on Psimet Custom Wheels. Biggest thanks of all, however, goes to our coach, Randy Warren, who after leading us through his favorite climbs in SLO now heads to Italy to lead a team time trial camp. The rest of us are recovering in Chicago, eager for the imminent road season.

Registration opened today for our spring criterium, Alderman James Cappleman’s 46th Ward Lincoln Park Criterium, which will take place Sunday, April 22, near Montrose Harbor in Chicago. This is a new and exciting location for us, and we’re excited to welcome the Chicago Bicycle Advocate as title sponsor of our P/1/2/3 race.

Our latest state champions

We’re sad to see the 2011 Chicago Cyclocross Cup come to a close but we couldn’t be happier with out it went out. For the second consecutive year, XXX Racing-AthletiCo won the state championship in the highly competitive Cat 3’s, this time with an emotional finish from William Pankonin, who was aided by exemplary teamwork from 2nd-place finisher Liam Donoghue. Our second championship on the day came from John Stainthorp, who took home the 60+ title. Meanwhile, in the women’s 4’s, Sandra Samman capped a great season with a 3rd-place finish, clinching the overall cup victory, and in the 4’s, we earned podiums from Mark McCain in the A’s and Fred Schuler in the B’s.

There are still a few races left in 2011, but we’re already making big plans for 2012 and we’d love to include you in them. Memberships are being accepted for the following season, and now is the best time to join in order to take advantage of what the team offers and to ensure new uniforms before the racing starts. Goose Island on Sunday once again hosted our annual awards banquet, where we celebrated a great 2011 and started looking forward to an even better 2012. Among the 2011 award winners: track MVP Sandra Samman and Larry Stoegbauer; cyclocross MVPs Sandra Samman and William Pankonin; road MVPs Mia Moore and Ryan Fay; mountain MVP Brian Parker; super domestiques Sue Wellinghoff and Mike Seguin; “Best Looking in Spandex” Sandra Samman; “Blood, Sweat and Gears” Aaron Delabre; most improved William Pankonin; and overall MVP Liam Donoghue. Congratulations to these winners and all teammates who contributed to this year’s successes!
