Despite blustery and even snowy weather, we had hundreds of riders come out Saturday for Alderman James Cappleman’s 46th Ward Criterium, and the racing was fantastic. Special thanks goes to our race director Rick LaCour and volunteer coordinator Kevin O’Neill, as well as all the great volunteers who gave up their time to ensure safe racing. And thanks to our speedy officials, results are already online. Now we turn our attention to June 7-9 and the Tour of Galena, a challenging stage race and one of the few road races in Illinois. Super start to the season

Congratulations to Nikos Hessert, Ellen Ryan and Ryan O’Boyle for winning their respective races at Saturday’s Spring Super Criterium in South Beloit. The road season is off to a great start, and we look forward to seeing everyone again at this Saturday’s Lincoln Park Criterium.

Team ride switches to summer hours

Starting Saturday, April 6, we move to our summer hours for our weekly team ride. We will leave from Wicker Park at 7 and the corner of Ridge and Pratt at 7:30. Note, however, that attendance may be light on April 6 as many of us head north to support the Spring Super Criterium, and attendance will certainly be light on April 13, when we hope you will join us for Alderman James Cappleman’s Lincoln Park Criterium.

We are super stoked to return to Lincoln Park on April 13 for Alderman James Cappleman’s 46th Ward Lincoln Park Criterium. This is the North Side’s only bike race of the year and offers categories for all levels of riders. Online pre-registration is available now and highly recommended for lower categories. Goose Island on Sunday once again hosted our annual awards banquet, where we celebrated a great 2012 and started looking forward to an even better 2013. Among the 2012 award winners: track MVP Sandra Samman and Liam Donoghue; cyclocross MVPs Jessica Whiton and Luke Seemann; road MVPs Sue Wellinghoff and Adam Herndon; mountain MVP Mark Baranowski; super domestiques Sue Wellinghoff and Tom Briney; “Best Looking in Spandex” Sandra Samman; “Blood, Sweat and Gears” Alan Treuthart; most improved Adam Herndon; and overall MVP Liam Donoghue. Congratulations to these winners, and thanks to all teammates and supporters who contributed to this year’s many successes!

Team caps season at track nats

Liam Donoghue and his XXX Racing-Atheltico teammates capped the track season in style this weekend with three medal performances at the U.S. track national championships in Carson, Calif. First Donoghue earned a silver in the individual pursuit, the highest finish the team has ever had in an elite national championship. Then he joined Dave Moyer, Tom Briney and former teammate John Tomlinson to earn silver in the team pursuit. Finally Donoghue had what Moyer called “the ride of his life” to earn a bronze medal in a very competitive points race. And in local track news, XXX Racing-Athletico earned three rider-of-the-year awards at the Northbrook Velodrome: Donoghue in the P/1/2’s, Briney in the 3’s and Sandra Samman in the women 4’s.

Congratulations to all winners, including our own Jessica Whiton, who won the women’s 4’s race. Most important, thanks to all volunteers and helpers who made it a great day, including Athletico and Get a Grip Cycles, as well as our friends at Half Acre Cycling, Robots p/b Love and North Central Cyclery, who stayed late to help clear the course and who will be hosting the next race Sept. 30 in DeKalb. We can’t wait.

Jackson Park Cyclocross this Saturday

Pre-registration closes tonight, Wednesday, Sept. 12, for this Saturday’s kick-off of the 2012 Chicago Cyclocross Cup in Jackson Park. Register now to secure a spot as many fields are filling up. (Get on a waiting list by sending details to barnes@xxxracing.org.) Because of the great turnout, payout for the P/1/2/3 race will go from $200 to $580. In addition, to celebrate and encourage the growing women’s participation in cyclocross, we are matching payouts for the elites, so the women’s P/1/2/3 race will also enjoy a $580 purse. Thanks to all the racers and volunteers who braved monsoon conditions to kick off the cyclocross season at Relay Cross. Donoghue hits podium at track nationals

Liam Donoghue broke new ground for XXX Racing-Athletico this weekend by placing 4th at the elite omnium track national championships in Rock Hill, S.C. Of the six events, Donoghue won two of them, the points race and the pursuit, during the latter of which he set a course record of 4:46.9 for 4k.

Expect attendance to be light at this Saturday’s team ride: Most team members will be elsewhere taking our annual photo. A few weeks later, we’ll be kicking off the cyclocross season with Jackson Park Cyclocross on Saturday, Sept. 15. Weather permitting, however, we’ll be out there every other Saturday.

Howdy, partners! It’s time to find your fastest friends and start preparing for Relay Cross. This year’s edition will be Sunday, Aug. 26, on a new course in Jackson Park. Once again we’ll have a wide range of fields available, including the popular co-ed field, and a generous and creative list of prizes. The official flyer is available, but we also have a series of more whimsical posters if you’d like to help spread the word on Facebook. Online registration is highly recommended.
