Cyclocross – FAQ

What is CX-cyclocross?

It’s pure fun! For CX’ers, dirt and mud are not impediments: they are called “features”. Same goes with barriers, off-cambers: these challenges break routine. And, being in the late fall, early winter, the weather brings conditions that can make each lap an entertaining and unique experience. The races start with a pure rush of adrenaline as racers sprint to get the best position before you reach the first race feature. From there, the battle is to stay rubber side down, while your twist, turn, slip, slide, and jump around the course at nearly full speed. Win or lose, Cx-racers are a community you can rely on each weekend to do it all again come wind, rain, or snow.

History and Format

Started in the 1900s in Central Europe, by cyclists who wanted to workout during the off-season (hence the Winter!). The races are short (30-60 min) and intense (because it’s freezing!). Because the races were originally held in farmers fields and other natural off-road areas, added features mimic the original terrain and optimize the fun!

Is it for me?

Chicago cyclocross events welcome all genders, ages, and skills. Want to try but you don’t have a CX bike? Just bring in your MTB or any bikes you have handy. We do recommend having tires with grip (gravel, MTB or Cx tires), don’t forget your helmet!
